Why Does My Dachshund Throw Up In The Morning? If your Dachshund throws up first thing in the morning before eating breakfast, then it could be because he’s hungry. Stomach acid and bile build up in your Dachshund’s empty stomach and cause him to be sick. It’s often referred to as a ‘hunger puke’.

Why Is My Dachshund Sick First Thing In The Morning?

If your Dachshund is sick first thing in the morning before eating his breakfast, then it could be because he’s hungry.

Stomach acid can build up in your Dachshund’s empty stomach and cause him to puke bile.

The vomiting only ever happens in the early morning, usually between around 4am to 7am and always takes place before your Dachshund has eaten breakfast.

Normally, your Dachshund will be perfectly fine and have no other symptoms once he’s been sick. He should be energetic and playful just like he always is!

What Will My Dachshund’s Vomit Look Like?

If your Dachshund throws up first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, the vomit will normally look like foamy, yellow or clear coloured, watery bile.

That’s because the stomach acid irritates your Dachshund’s empty stomach and causes him to puke bile!

Your Dachshund could even be sick several times in the space of a few minutes.

However, the sick will be more like liquid and won’t normally have any large bits of food in it (although you may come across a few dog toy tails and ears!).

How Do I Stop My Dachshund Throwing Up In The Morning?

Dachshunds can vomit for many different reasons. But, if your Dachshund is throwing up bile because his stomach is empty, then this is what you need to do:

Give your Dachshund a snack before bed

Feed your Dachshund a couple of dry dog biscuits before bedtime. This should line his stomach and keep him going until breakfast time.

This is normally the first course of action to stop your Dachshund being sick first thing in the morning.

Check you’re feeding the right amount of dog food each day

Make sure you’re feeding your Dachshund or puppy the recommended daily allowance of dog food each day.

Choose dog food with a high nutritional value to keep your Dachshund fuller for longer.

Check you’re giving your Dachshund the right amount of meals each day

You need to be feeding your adult Dachshund two meals a day. One meal for breakfast at around 7am and another meal for dinner at around 5pm.

For puppies, make sure you’re feeding the right amount of meals per day for their age.

Feed breakfast early

If your Dachshund is often sick first thing in the morning, then feed him some dog biscuits or breakfast as soon as you wake up.

The earlier you fill up your Dachshund’s tummy with food, the less likely he is to be sick!

Work on your feeding routine

Many Dachshunds are known to be fussy eaters and some will simply refuse to eat the dog food they’re given.

Of course, your Dachshund could be unwell so you need to rule that out first with your vet.

If all is well and there are no health problems, you need to get your Dachshund into a regular feeding routine.

Start putting your Dachshund’s food on the floor for 20 minutes and then taking it away again. Once he knows there’s no other food to be had, he should then start to eat.

However, Dachshunds are smart and very capable of wrapping you around their little paws. So, if you give in and start feeding your Dachshund other food or tasty treats from the fridge, then you’ll be forever pandering to him!

It’s important to get your Dachshund to eat the right amount of food each day, so his stomach doesn’t stay empty for too long and cause him to puke bile.

Medication

If none of the above works and your Dachshund is still being sick first thing in the morning, visit your vet to rule out any other health conditions.

Your vet will discuss any medication options with you and may prescribe your Dachshund some antacids to neutralise his stomach acid.
